How does Beta Alanine work?

When we engage in high-intensity exercise, a significant amount of hydrogen ions accumulate due to the onset of anaerobic glycolysis. This makes the environment within our muscles more acidic. While many people associate the burning sensation in the muscles with lactic acid, it's actually the hydrogen ions released from lactic acid that are responsible for this feeling.

The accumulation of acidic hydrogen ions causes muscle PH to fall. Which in turn causes muscle strength to decrease and the onset of muscle fatigue. This is where Beta Alanine supplementation can be of must use, by delaying this initial onset of fatigue caused by a drop in PH.

The performance benefits don't come directly from Beta Alanine itself, but instead from it's ability to boost the production of Carnosine (a naturally occurring dipeptide composed of two amino acids: Beta-alanine and Histidine). Muscle Carnosine works by acting as an acid buffer, absorbing hydrogen ions produced during intense activity, thus restoring pH levels to normal. This allows athletes to maintain high-intensity efforts for longer before we see the onset of muscle fatigue caused by the accumulation of hydrogen ions.
